Rules and Notes for course attendance
The following rules are
provided to assist Leaders in charge of groups of trainees attending a course of
sailing instruction, at Swarkestone. Please observe these simple instructions
thereby helping ensure that the sailing sessions are enjoyable, beneficial and
safe.
It may possible to arrange for
your instructor or another member of the club to come along on your meeting
night to give a short talk on the syllabus and requirements. If you feel that
this would be beneficial please contact the
Commodore
Rules
The rules of the Swarkestone Sailing
Club – and the water activity rules in P.O.R., relevant to dinghy sailing –
must be observed.
-
The Parental Consent form must be handed to the course
administrator/instructor on the first night along with any specific
information relating to individual youngsters needs.
-
There must be a minimum of two leaders [See note 1
below], who must remain with their group of
trainees throughout each session. They are, of course, responsible for the behaviour and discipline of their group of trainees when they are not
sailing.
Assistance from adults to rig, recover the boats and to assist as
necessary, will help the youngsters gain the maximum from the course as
well as to allow the instructors to provide additional assistance for those
who need it.
- Please
remember that the D.A.S.S.C. are simply family members of the Swarkestone
Sailing Club. As such our conduct should reflect credit on all concerned.
No group, or individual, is to attempt to prepare, launch or sail a dinghy
in the absence of an approved Sailing Instructor.
All facilities must be left clean and tidy.
-
Trainees and adults must wear correctly fitting buoyancy aids at all times
when afloat. They must also be worn when using the pontoons.
- Should
any untoward accidents occur then they should be reported through the normal
channels.
- The
trainees must not enter the Clubhouse unless accompanied by a Leader or
Sailing Instructor.
- Swimming
is not permitted in the Swarkestone Sailing Club waters; other than as a
result of a capsize.
-
Trainees, after initial instruction, will be expected to assist with the
preparation, launch, recovery and berthing of the dinghies. Leaders should
ensure that their group of trainees fully involve themselves accordingly –
it forms part of the training.
Note 1
Where female scouts, or Guides, attend there must be an female CRB checked adult present
In view of comments made at
a recent meeting, with representatives of the Swarkestone Sailing Club it is
felt necessary to draw your attention to point 3 and 4 above. In view of past
experiences this is having to be strongly enforced.
Clothing
- Trainees
should be advised to wear warm clothes and waterproofs (if possible,
wetsuits are recommended) with ‘old trainers’ as footwear. They should
also bring a change of clothes and a towel – just in case they get soaked.
(Showers are available in the Clubhouse changing rooms.)
- Whilst
sailing waterproof jackets and trousers are considered essential minimal
outer protection. Even on a warm summer’s evening it can be very cold out on
the water, and dinghies do occasionally capsize. Should the conditions be
severe the instructors may insist on the wearing of wetsuits for personal
safety.
Contacts
- If a
group finds no Sailing Instructor present at Swarkestone, by the session
start time, please telephone your nominated emergency contact.
This will normally be Ian Forster (the Secretary; Derby 558797) – otherwise
contact : Tony Allton (the Bo’sun, Derby 556368).
Sailing Fees
- Fees
should be paid on receipt of confirmation of booking – certainly no later
than the first evening of each Group’s training sessions. It’s both
preferable to use group cheques – this avoids the handling of cash, and
accounting for it.
- The cheque should be clearly marked with the groups number, so that the
treasurer can record which group has paid.
- Cheques are to be forwarded to Mr. Peter Hilton (the Treasurer; Derby 551974). They
should be made out to – The Derby Area Scout Sailing Club.
Notes
- We expect that all youngsters participating are capable of tying the following
knots:- Reef Knot; Figure of Eight; Bowline and Round Turn & Two
Half-hitches.
- If in any doubt whatsoever please ask; water can be dangerous if not treated with
respect. Nevertheless sailing is a magnificent ‘green’ sport – to be
enjoyed.
