About DASSC

Derby Area Scout Sailing Club was formed several years ago as a means of getting young people, both Scouts and Guides, out on the water and to learn the skill of sailing. We offer six week sessions during which youngsters work towards RYA Young Sailor Level 1. Once awarded, they can then join future courses to obtain Level 2 & 3. In addition to the RYA courses, we can organize taster sessions, subject to instructor availability.

The club is based at Carsington Sailing Club and is probably one of the safest sailing waters in the area.

At present, the club uses single handed ‘Toppers’ and a two person ‘Laser Pico’ and operate with at least one safety boat on the water during the sailing session. Buoyancy aids are provided and must be worn at all times and there are some wetsuits available if required.

The instructors are RYA recognized who, along with a number of helpers give up their time voluntarily - thus keeping costs down. You will struggle to find a cheaper sailing course anywhere!!

Safety is of absolute paramount importance; therefore, we ensure the correct ratios of instructors to youngsters is maintained at all times.

When we sail

We run two sessions a week on Thursdays and Fridays for 10 youngsters, the cost for the six week course is £30 per youngster. The sessions start promptly at 6:30pm and usually run till around 8:30-9:00pm (depending on the weather and how much light is available)

Many groups return year after year, with youngsters achieving RYA level 3. To date, we have not had any one go on to the Olympics or sail around the world, but some youngsters have gone onto to do ‘Adventures Offshore’, ‘Tall Ships’ and racing larger boats in the Solent.

Whatever the level of ability, we can offer the youngsters an opportunity to feel the exhilaration and excitement that sailing can offer and maybe there may be a budding Olympian waiting to get their feet Wet!!
